Sauvignon Blanc

MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2013

Konrad Wines, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.

VITICULTURE

This wine is our signature Sauvignon Blanc.  It is sourced from organically farmed & BioGro certified grapes in the family owned Waihopai Valley Vineyard, in New Zealand’s Marlborough winegrowing region.  The vineyard is now fully certified BioGro status and as such is grown without the use of synthetic, fungicides, insecticides or herbicides.  The vines are cultivated under vine which forces the roots to delve down into the soil to extract moisture & nutrients from the sub-soil resulting in more complex flavours in the fruit.  One unexpected bonus is that the vines are now less likely to take up water after rain & therefore remain healthy for longer during the season. The 2013 growing season was a dream to manage.  A cool spring initially delayed the start of the growing season and cool weather over flowering resulted in a reduced fruit set.   Then the El Nino that we had been waiting for finally kicked in over summer and we enjoyed one of the best summers in years.  This heat accelerated vine development which meant we had to keep a very close eye on flavour development as the fruit ripened.

TASTING NOTES The Konrad Sauvignon Blanc is a style that spans both hemispheres.  We adhere to old world philosophies where the signature of the vineyard is uppermost while using new world winemaking techniques to respect the fruit we have grown.  The aromatics of this wine are intense yet classically restrained.  The primary aromas of nettles, gooseberry and grapefruit are complemented by exotic fruits, subtle spice and the barest hint of flint.  The palate is full flavoured and quite punchy for this vineyard, a hallmark of 2013.  It is a rich, mouth-filling style of Sauvignon with lovely doughy texture & impressive palate length.  It is a wine that will comfortably develop for the next 5-8 years into a complex, toasty wine of great depth and character.  Enjoy with classic European cuisine such as Vitello Tonnato (dish of cold, sliced veal covered with a creamy, mayonnaise-like sauce),bouillabaisse, freshly shucked oysters or try it with a Kiwi delicacy, freshly caught & grilled Paua (Abalone) then lie back & think of the sea.
